Workplace of the Future: The Impact of Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, and Related Technologies

Image
Extended reality is one of the biggest phrases in the tech world, and for good reason. XR technology is fast growing, and quickly becoming an integral part of the workforce. The impact of augmented reality, virtual reality, and similar technologies are creating the workplace of the future by streamlining standard operating procedures, increasing customer engagement, and automating work previously done by humans. Furthermore, businesses using augmented and virtual reality for training purposes are creating a higher level of productive and efficient employees, enabling them with confidence and better memory capabilities than ever before. The Abilities of AR, VR, and AI Extended reality has many benefits inherent in the technology. For instance, the ability to retain information is heightened because of the experiential way that training and education happens withing a virtual or augmented environment. When put into a simulated environment, the user isn't just experiencing information...

How Virtual Reality Enriches the Roots of the Education Process

Image
Education began as a necessary exchange or transference of cultural heritage. What was once done as a means of survival became a means of preservation of culture, and then became something entirely new. Culture, while still the root of many educational processes, has taken a backseat as the main driving force of education. Today, educational goals are a little broader in concepts, though no less necessary for our survival- at least the survival of our current way of life. Virtual reality is a newer iteration of an old method of transferring information from one person to the next. While it commonly gained its widespread popularity in the gaming and entertainment sphere, virtual reality also has the ability to deeply enrich the roots of the educational process. Much like books and videos created by knowledgeable professionals and past generations offer valuable insights for students, virtual reality in education is another tool used to transfer knowledge from one person to another. The ...

Current and Potential Uses of AR/VR for Equity and Inclusion

Image
While not a catch-all for every situation, augmented and virtual reality can create greater equity and inclusion in a variety of settings. The innate capabilities of XR technology have it uniquely positioned to help create a better working, educational, and social environments for everybody involved. Augmented reality development has undergone major changes in recent years due to its rising demand in households, and as the technology gained mainstream notoriety, the desire for more inclusive technology was met, closing the gap between the physical reality of disability, race, and gender. Augmented and virtual reality is an innately inclusive technology that provides an opportunity for anybody interested in continuing education, career development, gaming, and personal improvement, regardless of certain barriers that would otherwise hold them back. How Can AR/VR Provide Equity and Inclusion? The first step, let's define both equity and inclusion. Equity, as defined by the Merriam-We...

The Path to Mainstream Virtual and Augmented Reality in Manufacturing

Image
In the world of digital connectedness that we live in today, the development of virtual and augmented reality is a high priority for some of the leading industries that keep the world moving forward. Manufacturers who participated in a PwC survey in 2015 revealed that more than one in three manufacturers would consider, or had plans to adopt virtual and augmented technologies by 2018. ( Source ) At this point in 2023, virtual reality in manufacturing is projected to reach USD 14,887 million by 2026. This is a 39.2% increase from where it stood in 2016. ( Source ) However, even with this rise in use, there are manufacturers hesitant to adopt the technology into their facilities. With the right knowledge and resources, the path to virtual and augmented reality in manufacturing is clear, if those with the right knowledge and expertise are willing to share valuable information. The truth is that virtual and augmented reality are the perfect tool to help advance manufacturing, and move it i...

Is Virtual Reality Worth it?

Image
Even though the technology is not new, virtual reality is still an emerging tech. It has spent several decades on the periphery of mainstream spotlight, sitting just off to the side while other technologies took center stage. In recent years, after events that unwittingly facilitated the change, virtual reality development was pushed into the spotlight and is finally getting the recognition it needs to gain momentum in mainstream media. With this sudden push, there are those who question the field as a whole, claiming that it is a mere gimmick. Virtual reality is a software that, when combined with head mounted displays and sensors, offer the user an immersive environment capable of tricking their brains into believing they don't occupy the physical space they're in. Because it has been so often used in entertainment some people are skeptical. It's understandable, given its main use has been in game development, an area that people often don't take seriously. What other...

Why and How Virtual Reality is Growing

Image
Almost sixty years ago, Ivan Sutherland and his student Bob Sproull created the Sword of Damocles, a head mounted display (HMD) that hung over the user's head from cables and poles rigged into the ceiling. The name, Sword of Damocles, refers to the ancient moral parable of Damocles of Sicily in the 4th Century BCE. In this story, he happily traded places with the king only to find that the king had placed a sword over the throne, where Damocles was required to sit. This sword was held up by just one horse hair. The phrase in turn refers to the unpredictability of life and the existence of potential danger. It was probably used because of the sheer size of the hardware and how it hung over the wearer's head like a threat. Today, virtual reality users don't have to fear death by device because advancements in virtual reality development have scaled that original HMD to one that fits in a bag and doesn't give the user chronic neck pain. But that's not the only reason t...

Three Types of Virtual Reality and How to Use Them

Image
Virtual reality is one of the biggest buzz words among mainstream media in recent years, and for good reason. Advancements in VR development have not only created jobs, but made a significant impact on workplaces, schools, and the medical system- in finances, training, and patient care. Virtual reality has drastically improved the effectiveness and training time in many industries and created an increase in connectivity and efficiency in the work place. With this rise in awareness of virtual reality and its use cases, many people are considering using virtual reality to one degree or another. One thing to note is that there are three types of virtual reality and each has a different reason for use. But first, what is virtual reality? What is Virtual Reality and How Does It Work Virtual reality is one end of the XR or extended reality spectrum, where one end supplements the physical world with digital information (augmented reality) and the other (virtual reality) removes the physical w...

Myths Busted- Common Misconceptions about AR and VR Technology

Image
Virtual reality is a new technology. False. Augmented reality is hard to make. False. Only gamers can enjoy virtual reality. False. Virtual and augmented reality have been around for years and rapidly gained popularity in many fields, but the terms are still relatively new in mainstream media. Even though talk about VR and AR has gone up, there are still several common misconceptions about AR and VR technology that are simple misguided statements by those who just don't know any better. Let's take some time to dispel those misconceptions. Myth: Virtual and augmented reality are new technologies. Truth: New is a relative term, so if we compared the time that XR technology has been around to the first introduction of the concept to media, then yes. VR and AR are new technologies. But the first real idea for augmented reality came in a sci-fi book by L. Frank Baum titled The Master Key over 100 years ago. Compared to that, many things are new. In truth, while not yet mainstream, ...
